Sriram Veera: There is a reason why Shubman Gill hasn’t yet been given the final nod by the greats. When the ball moves around a bit from a length, he hasn’t quite looked convincing. Shaheen Afridi and co. literally toyed with him for a while, there, squaring him up, sucking him into injudicious prods, and generally kept him involved in the guessing game.

Gill’s problem, as detailed a few times in the pages of this newspaper, has continued to be the same: the slow weight transfer to the front foot. It slows up even more when he is in doubts as he was in Pallekele. Bred on cement tracks, his backfoot on-the-up game is quite something, and that trait got him the Brisbane glory and raving admirers. The problem, though, never was going to be on Australian type tracks where he can set up his stall and keep punching on the up or through the line if the bowlers pitch it up. It’s on these conditions like in today’s game, or in England, or even in India where the ball starts to reverse and the bowlers find the ideal length.

He can get stuck on the crease after his initial back movement and then just try to play with his hands. You can see he has been trying hard to improve that part of the game: for a while, in the last few months, he would exaggeratedly lean forward with his left shoulder at stance, stop his back trigger movement, but hasn’t been able to nail the forward weight transfer.

Luckily, today, the edges didn’t come or when they did, they didn’t carry. With the ball squirting from a length, he has always been late and searching for the ball. As opposed to Shreyas Iyer, who in his brief confident stay, showed how the forward lean-in allied with soft hands can do the job.

One good thing; despite his few swishes, he hasn’t combusted yet and has been willing to look ugly. Let’s see if he can continue to hang in, see out the next few overs and start doing his thing.

Rahul Pandey: Shaheen Afridi had made his mind right from the word go. An inswinging delivery was how he planned to take the Indian skipper out of the equation. If you want to understand the relevance of an India vs Pakistan game to a cricketer, just listen to the following anecdotes from Sultan, Wasim Akram's memoir co-written by Gideon Haigh.

The book paints a vivid picture of the most chaotic day of Pakistan's 1999 tour to India. Sachin Tendulkar's run out after a collision with Shoaib Akhtar, the third umpire's controversial verdict going against India, chants of 'cheat, cheat', stones aimed at Pakistan fielders, early call for tea and the full-to-the-brim 1,00,000 capacity Eden Gardens resembling a tinder box ready to be ignited by flames in the stands.

But the Eden fire had to be urgently doused. That very morning - February 19, 1999 - PM Atal Behari Vajpayee had started his famous bus journey to Lahore. During the break, Akram writes, Sunil Gavaskar and the match referee approached him with a suggestion. "Wasim, we think you should recall Sachin, people will love you in India," Gavaskar would tell the Pakistan captain. Akram's reply captured the complexity of these encounters that are much more than a game. "Sunnybhai, they might love me in India but they'll hate me in Pakistan."

At another time on the same tour, Akram would find himself under a high ball that Tendulkar had skied while mishitting a Saqlain Mushtaq doosra. This was during the first Test at Chennai when Tendulkar was merely a few strokes short of completing a match-winning masterpiece. "...Everyone in one country was willing me to catch what everyone in another country was willing me to drop," was his recollection of the most important catch of his career.

Akram held his nerves and the ball. India ended up losing the epic first Test of the series at Chennai. Within days, Anil Kumble's historic 10 wickets at Kotla would draw the spectacular series. Akram shares his emotions when standing next to his counterpart at the end of the 1-1 series. "Azharuddin and I posed soberly with the trophy, each perhaps a little relieved: as I knew ... life would have been sour for the loser."

"When there is cloud cover but no rain, the period is challenging because the ball doesn’t get wet. After the rain when they are looking to start the game, the outfield is still wet. The umpires and players don’t mind playing as long as the central square is dry. It’s all fine as long as the ball is not going outside the 30-yard circle since it is mostly dry. The moment the ball starts to travel to deep square-leg, third man, fine leg and deep point, there is a problem for the fielding side. The ball starts getting wet and stops moving. It may have a fraction of seam movement but swing will stop. That is what batsmen try to do post-rain. You try to make sure the ball gets outside the 30-yard circle. It is the imbalance of the ball that causes swing. That is the reason teams try to keep one side dry and one side shiny. The moment you have players touching the dry side with their palm, the moisture is absorbed by the leather. Once that happens, the imbalance is gone. In ODI matches whenever there is dew, the first few overs are critical ones. Bowlers will get the ball to swing early because after 8-10 overs, the swing stops as the ball starts to go outside the 30-yard circle. "
